Track 05: Small Town

ACTION: EVERYWHERE - ALL DAY - EVERYONE

[As Yosuke's settled himself into Mayfield, he finds one question gnawing at the back of his head.

Is this place really that bad?

Sure, there's the dronings and the weird things that happen, but day to day everybody's able to go about their lives - maybe even find things to do that make them happy. They bring bits and pieces from home and make connections with other people. They can even meet people they never would have at home. Does the good the people make in this town outweigh the bad the town tries to bring them down with?

He's curious. Also, it's a great excuse to take a day off and wander around the town, so that's exactly what he does - he sets out and walks, with no destination in mind]

Hugo almost immediately lets go in surprise, landing on the ground more awkwardly than he'd like and stumbling forward into a barrel roll, stopping almost right in front of Yosuke.

Come on, playing on a tree isn't that embarrassing. I used to do it when I was a kid.

Well, sort of. [Caesar is, but he's droned. And well, he wasn't exactly trying to climb this time.] It's more like they're... busy at the moment. [He's bored.] What about you?

I've been thinking a lot about this place, so I took the day off and figured I'd talk a walk. See some places, meet some people.

Looks like it's working so far.

Well... I guess I'm wondering how everybody handles being stuck here.

I mean, people have been here for years, right? I don't know, I guess I'm just curious to see what people are like when they've been here for that long.

How long have you been here, Yosuke?

A little over a month I think.

I'm worried I'm starting to get a little too comfortable here, you know?

I don't think it's so bad. I... don't think I'll ever feel that comfortable in this place. It's too different from where I'm from.

I don't know. I mean, you get a few things back, make a few friends, and suddenly this place isn't so bad.

I... I don't know, maybe I'm thinking too much.

... No, I can see where you're coming from. It's probably easier for people like that.

... My home isn't like this though. This is more like the homes of Iron--- [... He needs to get out of that habit.] Zexen. It reminds me of where Zexen's people live.

You... mind explaining what a Zexen is?

It's not really a what more like a where. Um...

They live in stone houses and their soldiers were iron armor, so there was a time when we referred to them as ironheads. They have confusing and overly complicated systems and their council can be pretty rude. [... Wait, that makes them sound like bad people.] But Zexen--- well, Brass Castle--- has a lot of nice people there! It's by the sea, so the breeze is good too.

So you're used to living somewhere a little more... natural?

That's right. [...] How about you though? Did you live in a place like this?

... yeah, actually. It was a lot like this. More modern though, this is kind of old fashioned.

[He thinks for a moment]

Well, the part where people went crazy and started killing each other? That's new.

... That's definitely new. I've never seen it happen that way before.

Where I'm from, yeah. Technology is really far behind here, but I guess it's not that way for everyone.

If you're used to nature though, this place must have been a pretty big culture shock for you.

It's all really strange to me--- especially the television. I really don't know how they did that.

It... really was. I'm still getting used to everything.
